eCycling with the Final Four: Drop off your used electronics Saturday
Got a dinosaur in your garage that dates back to the paleo-pre-flatscreen era? Maybe a clunky old computer or an out-of-use fax machine?
Free up some space and help protect the environment this weekend with the NCAA Final Four's eCycling event. Waste Management and LG have teamed up with our local Final Four organizers to create a streamlined drop-off center where Houstonians can rid themselves of their old, out-of-use electronics and free themselves of some environmental guilt in the process.
Nearly 40 volunteers will unload unwanted electronics from your pick-up truck bed or trunk and load them into one of 20 trailers, each of which can hold 15,000 pounds of electronic waste.
Waste Management public affairs director Richard Abramowitz tells CultureMap there's valuable material in electronics that shouldn't go to waste. "It's all about resource management. From memory boards to computer chips, it's better to reuse and recycle," hesays
Donated materials will avert the landfill and instead travel to Waste Management's processing plant to be dismantled, and all useable parts will be shipped to various companies around the world.
Acceptable items to be donated include computer monitors, printers, fax machines, keyboards, photocopiers, TVs and VCRs, stereos, phones and other electronics.
Unacceptable items include microwaves, smoke detectors and fire alarms, thermometers, non-decontaminated medical equipment, large appliances or anything with sludge or liquids inside.
Conn's Appliances is also supporting the event at their Houston-area stores. Every family who donates products to be eCycled will receive discounts on any LG-brand flat-screen TV.
Those wishing to recycle their electronics can stop by Reliant Stadium's Blue Lot (entrance located off Kirby, between 610 and Westbridge) between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday.
