Technology's Stepchild
No Facebook friend for Houston: Perry pitches Austin as new hub
It seems that when it comes to Texas cities, Houston is always the bridesmaid, never the bride. The black sheep of the family. The red-headed stepchild. Jan Brady.
Our worthy city was passed over by Gov. Rick Perry's office in favor of pushing Austin (shocking) as the proposed site for a new Facebook national office. Despite our supply of techie geeks — we hosted our own code-a-thon, HELLO — it seems Houston was never in the running.
Are the bars on 6th Street really that enticing? Do the leaders of the wired world really think those "Keep Austin Weird" T-Shirts are cutting-edge cool?
For its part, Facebook is not officially commenting on Austin - with a spokesperson saying that the social networking behemoth is looking at several possible locales around the country for a new satellite office. Perry is offering $1.4 million in incentives, with the money coming from the Texas Enterprise Fund. Another $200,000 would need to be provided by the city of Austin.
Perry announced the plan on his Facebook page, a PR play that should get the young staffer who actually knows how to use Facebook in Perry's office a raise.
The move would provide 200 well-paying jobs (the reported average annual salary would be $54,000). The blog Tech Chronicles reports that Facebook's proposed satellite office would be home to sales support, customer service and risk management staff.
The city of Austin will hold a public hearing on the plan March 11.
We'll be in the corner with our dunce cap on.
