Daytime burglary spree puts Pearland on edge: Napping college kid foils one, but concern mounts
Pearland residents are up in arms about a spate of daytime burglaries that have cost homeowners thousands of dollars in stolen goods.
At least nine homes have been targeted in less than two weeks . . . and all with the same M.O., according to lieutenant Onesimo Lopez with the Pearland Police Department.
"They seem to knock on the door of homes without alarm system signs out front. When there's no answer, they just kick in the door."
"They typically strike between about 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. when most people are at work," he tells CultureMap.
"They seem to knock on the door of homes without alarm system signs out front. When there's no answer, they just kick in the door and take anything that's easily transported, like TVs, jewelry and laptops."
While the thieves have had a successful run this month, KHOU Ch. 11 reports that one burglary was foiled thanks to a college student taking an afternoon nap.
"I heard them knocking and ringing the bell. Then boom, they kicked through the door," the student who didn't want to be identified said, adding that he shouted he was calling the police. Moments later, he heard two sets of feet leaving the house.
Investigators believe the thieves could be renting cars to use during their daytime raids. As of yet, the only vehicle sighted in the vicinity of the crimes has been a dark four-door SUV.
