A fashion show that means something: Stylish kids on the catwalk are cancer champs

Shelby Hodge

Talk about a feel-good moment, that would be the Texas Children's Cancer Center's "Celebration of Champions" luncheon where youthful patients joined grown-up honorees in a walk down the runway at the Omni Houston Hotel.

The kiddos, decked out in stylish threads, were super champs at the sixth annual fundraiser chaired by Sidney Faust, Elsie Eckert, Judi McGee and Scott Basinger, the youngsters' beaming faces beyond heartwarming for the packed ballroom.

Leading the young patients on their star turn were the honorees — Donna and Robert Bruni, Jeanie Kilroy Wilson, Beth Madison, Carolyn and Dr. Michael Mann, Dr. Parth Mehta, Susan Rafte, Sue and Lester Smith, Jane Weiner, Melissa Wilson and Merele Yarborough.

Long-time supporters of Texas Children's Cancer Center 93Q Morning Zoo host Kevin Kline reprised his role as humorous and passionate emcee.

Receiving the 2013 Torch of Champions award was His Grace Foundation, recognized for its work for providing physical, emotional and financial support to families of children with rare blood disorders.

Notables in the mix included Dr. Mark Kline and Nancy Calles, Dr. ZoAnn Dreyer, Dr. David Poplack, Emily Crosswell, Cora Sue and Harry Mach, Denise Bush Bahr and Philip Bahr, Joanne King Herring, Sybil Roos, Lynn Baird and Trish Morille.

Houston Astros star Jeremy Peña gets flashy grill treatment from local celeb jeweler

Johnny Dang welcomed Jeremy Peña to get his grill on.

Red-hot Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña is having his best week ever. Fresh off a World Series title in his rookie year — one that saw him replace the dearly departed Carlos Correa — Peña was just named the 2022 World Series MVP.

Peña, a 23-year-old phenom who's a heartthrob receiving total random marriage proposals, is also about to flash his winning smile with the help of a local celeb designer. Johnny Dang, a jeweler who regularly outfits stars and rappers with diamond good and grillz, welcomed the Astros star to be fitted for a custom grill of his own at his Richmond Avenue store.

"He did his part imma do mine," Dang wrote on social media. Dang and Peña posed in a batting stance; Peña sported his grill-fitting mouthpiece.

Dang counts Houston rapper Paul Wall as his most famous client and business partner. Wall, who is perhaps Houston's Minister of Grillz, joined Dang on a float at Monday's World Series championship parade downtown.

Consider this shiny honor a welcome to the team. Fans may recall that Dang, who promises a grill to every player who's interested, outfitted fiery ace Lance McCullers Jr. with a fresh "World Champs" grill in 2017.

Texas' biggest Japanese festival jets into Houston for 2 days of anime, cars, food, music, sumo, and more

Expect a cool cast of characters.

Hard to believe in the most diverse city in the nation, but Houston is home to little more than 4,000 residents who identify as Japanese. But suffice it to say, the small island nation of Japan is a giant in pop culture influences.

Now Houstonians can immerse themselves in Japanese food, music, art, anime, martial arts, cars, and much more at the Tokyo Night Festival. Attendees can expect major music acts, an A-list of food vendors, anime stars, Japanese hot rods, and even sumo wrestling at the event producers are calling the "biggest Japanese event in Texas."

The fun runs 3 pm-10 pm Friday and Saturday, November 11 and 12 at the Texas Festival Grounds, 6848 Almeda-Genoa Rd. Tickets range from $2-$52 and can be found online.

Here are some highlights of the two-day Japan fest.

The entertainment
A major draw is a live performance by legendary Japanese hip-hop artist Zeebra. Also look for Nisei Japanese hip-hop artist and youngest National Poetry Slam champion G Yamazawa; DJ Michael “5,000” Watts and Swisha House; Kaminari Taiko Houston; World Wadaiko Champion Takumi Kato; Onoe- Ryu Japanese Dance’s Hiromi Onoe; American Japanese idol Paida; international dancer and choreographer Juju; rapper Nevos Tyler; j-rock artist Melancholiaah!; kendama performer Michael Martin; dark pop duo Innerlux; Aymi, and more.

The food
More than 30 food vendors are confirmed for the festival. The vendors all are required to serve food with Japanese elements, combined with the vendors’ own flair. Food and drink participants include Shun Japanese Kitchen; Hako Bento Box Company; Japan Bites; Tokyo Maid Cafe; Japanese Association of Greater Houston (Takoyaki); Burger Chan; Cao Bao; Click Virtual Food Hall; Crawfish and Noodles; Ramen Tatsuya; ONIGIRI (gourmet Japanese rice balls); Tatsunoya Ramen; Aqua S; Dumpling Haus; Fattest Cow; Teagu Cafe; Global Republic; Kuramoto Ice; Marukome; Atcha; Hella Bubble; BB Concessions; Dream Eaters Coffee; Lincoln Bar; Pocari Sweat; Kimono Juice; Choya and more.

The sumo wrestling
On Saturday, the festival will host Houston’s first sumo tournament. The tournament will be open-weight only. The men’s tournament will be double eliminations (50 men maximum can register), while the women’s tournament will be round robin (20 women maximum can register). Winners will receive a trophy, a $200 cash prize, a special prize from the sponsors, and major bragging rights.

The voice actors
Fans can meet the voice actors (several of them hail from right here in Houston) who bring your favorite anime to life. Expect notable names such as Anthony Hunter, Blake Shepherd, Bryson Baugus, Christina Kelly, Jay Hickman, John Gremillion, John Swasey, Kyle Jones, and Olivia Swasey.

The culture
Quite simply, the weekend will be a chance for Houstonians to dive into Japanese culture. From martial arts showcases to jiu jitsu demonstrations to cosplay to classic Japanese cars and more, this event will definitely have a lot of people, to borrow an ‘80s song title, turning Japanese. (We really think so!)

The wildly popular tour springs into Houston for three weekends.

Houstonians ready to jump around this weekend are in luck, as a Guinness -certified tour springs into town for some bouncy fun. The Big Bounce America returns to the Houston area for weekend activities starting Saturday, November 12 and running through Sunday, November 26 at Katy Mills Mall.

Boasting the quite literally — and quite perfectly titled — The World’s Largest Bounce House, at a mammoth and record-holding 16,000 square feet, the touring attraction also includes a new Sport Slam featuring a customized sports arena; an obstacle course called The Giant that spans more than 900 feet; and a space-themed wonderland called airSPACE, perfect for Space City hoppers.

The wildly popular tour springs into Houston for three weekends.

Tickets start at $19 and can be found online. Special all-access tickets feature a three-hour pass to the event, including a timed session on The World’s Largest Bounce House, plus unlimited access to Sport Slam, The Giant, and airSPACE.

Here’s a little more about where to kick off those shoes and get more bounce for the ounce.

The World’s Largest Bounce House
Standing 32 feet at its highest point and spanning more than 16,000 square feet, this aired-up juggernaut includes giant slides, ball pits, climbing towers, and basketball hoops, all decked out with oversized characters for those picture-perfect Instagram moments. On center stage, a DJ hosts games, competitions, and spins music for each age group.

Sport Slam
New for 2022, fans can get their game on at Sport Slam, which features goals, nets, hoops, and balls, climbing zone, and a battle zone where contestants battle to see who can stay on the podium longest.

The Giant
Aimed at Ninja Warrior wannabes, this massive course dares athletes with 50 different courses and a grand finale monster slide.

airSPACE
Hopping astronauts will encounter (friendly) aliens, spaceships, moon craters, and a five-lane slide. Three ball pits and a 25-foot inflatable alien await in the center of the cosmic action.

-----

The Big Bounce America runs weekends from Saturday, November 12 through Sunday, November 26 at Katy Mills Mall, 5000 Katy Mills Cir. For a full schedule, tickets, and more information, visit the official website.
