Women's Equality Day Celebration
Women's Equality Day honored at 1920s-themed bash celebrating the right to vote
What: Houston’s Women’s Equality Day Celebration.
Where: Rice Media Center.
The scoop: The League of Women Voters celebrated the 96th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote, with a 1920s-themed fundraiser to benefit voter education resources, including the nonpartisan "Voters Guide to Candidates" for the November 2016 election.
More than 150 guests sampled the concession-stand themed buffet before attending a screening of the 2015 movie Suffragette. Attendees wrote their visions of equality on the "Equality Wall" and got a Herstory lesson on the women's suffrage movement from Nancy Sims, senior vice president of Pierpont Communications and professor at the University of Houston.
Who: Among the notables were emcee Miya Shay, Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector and Voter Registrar Mike Sullivan, Harris County Attorney Vince Ryan, Harris County Civil Court at Law Judge Clyde Leuchtag, Houston City Council Member Brenda Stardig, Consul General of Israel to the Southwest United States Eitan Levon, and State Representative Gene Wu, who presented a proclamation to the League honoring Women's Equality Day.
Becky Myers, Suzy Hartgrove, Kay Thompson and Kim Jessup dressed in '20s attire, while League of Women Voters president Aimee Mobley Turney wore a man's suit that would have gotten her arrested in the '20s. Also enjoying the evening were event chairs Aimee Bertrand and Parisa Moayedi, Sonia Sota, Sophia Mafrige, Joshua Sanders, Reda Hicks, Andy Teas, and Don Kelley, first male member of the League of Women Voters in Texas.
