    With summer winding down, most people are back at work. More people working means more traffic and longer commutes.

    While one way to survive a long drive is to listen to a podcast or a sports radio show, finding a place to grab a drink while traffic dies down works, too. Thankfully, many of this summer's most-exciting new bars and restaurants have started offering happy hours that are sure to fit any budget.

    This article always seeks out places that offer food and drink specials, but sometimes a drinks-only option is so compelling it sneaks in, too. Either option is better than sitting in traffic.

    Nobu
    The global sushi juggernaut is as well known for its high prices as its innovative cuisine and stylish decor, which makes its daily happy hour a welcome option. Available daily from 5 pm to 6 pm in the bar and on the patio, Nobu’s Tanoishi Hour offers lots of choices. Food options include signature dishes like the yellowtail sashimi with jalapeño, salmon with dry miso, black cod lettuce wraps, and four different sushi rolls ($8 to $16).     UB Preserv
    Chris Shepherd’s new restaurant celebrates “snack time” from 5 pm to 6:30 pm Tuesday through Saturday. Get half off the bar’s signature tiki bowl cocktails or opt for one of the selected beers, wines by-the-glass, or classic cocktails ($3 to $7).     International Smoke
    Michael Mina and Ayesha Curry are giving diners two chances to enjoy happy hour at their new CityCentre restaurant; it’s available Monday through Friday from both 4 pm to 6 pm and 9 pm to close. Choose from bites like oysters on the half shell or a daily bao bun or opt for something heartier like the Tokyo-style karaage or Cuban pulled pork sandwich. Get a real taste of the restaurant’s specialities with rib and barbecue oyster pairings (quarter rack and three oysters for $15 or a half rack and six oysters for $28).

    Doris Metropolitan
    The Israeli-inspired steakhouse may be known for its dry-aged meats, but a new happy hour menu provides diners with the opportunity to eat well for less money. Available Monday through Friday from 5 pm to 6:30 pm, the menu features bites like a bread plate ($6) and tomato salad ($8) as well as meal-worthy dishes like the Doris burger ($16) — served on a stunning-looking black brioche bun — as well as a beef kebab ($16) and a daily skewer ($18).     Relish Restaurant & Bar
    This River Oaks restaurant offers lots of affordable options on its happy hour menu. Served Monday through Saturday from 3 pm to 6 pm, choose from shareable bites like deviled eggs ($1), grilled dijon chicken wings ($6), or cheese and charcuterie boards ($18) or opt for individual items like chilled tomato gazpacho ($4), kale salad ($5), or a cheeseburger and fries ($7).     Weights + Measures
    The Midtown staple (and CultureMap Tastemaker Awards winner) just rolled out a new happy hour menu full of enticing offers. Available Monday through Friday from 2 pm to 6:30 pm in the bar, lounge, or patio, choose from snacks like blue cheese chips or Tuscan kale salad ($5 each) or get the signature roasted carrot pizza for just $10.     New Houston seafood restaurant adds live-fire flair to Japanese flavors

    An ambitious new seafood restaurant is coming to Montrose next week. Casa Kenji will open on Tuesday, December 9.

    Located in the former Andiron space (3201 Allen Pkwy), Casa Kenji is the first Houston project for New Orleans restaurateur Malachi DuPre, a former LSU standout who played briefly in the NFL before establishing Kenji and Kenji Kazoku restaurants in New Orleans. Together with former LSU teammate John “B-John” Ballis and Houston chef Bigler “Biggie” Cruz, Casa Kenji will blend Latin and Japanese influences while also incorporating live-fire elements into the restaurant’s dishes. Cruz, whose resume includes a lengthy stint at Uchi as well as working at critically acclaimed Houston seafood restaurant Golfstrømmen, tells CultureMap that Casa Kenji’s approach is the first time he can be himself in the kitchen.

    “My perfect restaurant was always based on the live fire and sushi combination,” Cruz says. “My mom cooked with wood for my entire life. The live fire creates completely different flavors. The smoky flavors, the sear from the charcoal — they create a different type of memory for me.”

    The use of live fire techniques will permeate Casa Kenji’s menus in ways both big and small. For example, diners will be able to feast on prawns grilled directly on charcoal and served with yuzu chili garlic, or savor lightly seared Japanese wagyu tataki paired with mushrooms. Even raw dishes will benefit from the restaurant’s wood-burning grill and stove.

    “Every vegetable we peel, we make into an ash that’s a topping for the dishes. It adds a different layer of flavor,” Cruz says. Look for it in the scallop aguachile, among others.

    Even vegetables get a smoky component, as in a cabbage dish that’s braised with dashi and soy sauce before being roasted and served with an onion soubise that Cruz says he developed based on techniques he learned from Golfstrømmen chef Christopher Haatuft.

    “It’s rich, super savory, with smoky layers, and you get brightness from the shiso gremolata. I think it will be a signature dish for us,” the chef says.

    One change to the interior is the addition of a six-seat omakase counter that looks into the kitchen. Cruz promises those diners will have an even more elevated experience than the restaurant’s regular menu, including ingredients such as Japanese wagyu and premium fish flown in from Tokyo’s Toyosu fish market.

    Beyond its cuisine, Casa Kenji hopes to stand out with its spacious outdoor patio. Since very few Japanese-inspired restaurants in Houston offer outdoor seating, it should appeal to diners who want a little vitamin D along with their tuna crudo.

    “We’re proud to showcase the craft and creativity that defines Casa Kenji,” co-founders Cruz, Ballis, and DuPre said in a statement. “With chef Bigler Cruz at the helm — blending live-fire technique with the discipline of Japanese tradition — we’re equally honored and excited to share a unique concept that is truly rooted in passion, culture, and community.”

    Casa Kenji will be open for dinner Tuesday through Sunday beginning at 4 pm. Reservations are available on Resy.
