    Hopdoddy in The Heights

Acclaimed Austin burger joint picks hot Heights development for 4th location

    Eric Sandler
    Jul 18, 2017 | 10:49 am

The Heights' status as Houston's hottest destination for new restaurant openings shows no signs of slowing down. This year alone, new arrivals like Field & Tides, Helen in the Heights, Presidio, and Alice Blue have helped the neighborhood maintain its status as the city's richest source of new openings, and the pace looks to continue next year with more restaurants on the way.

Hopdoddy will join Dallas-based coffee shop Ascension at the Heights Waterworks development, real estate developer Braun Enterprises announced. The restaurant will occupy 4,000-square feet of space in a building that will be constructed along 19th Street. The timeline on these projects is always tricky, but Wolf estimates the restaurant will open in the fall of 2018. Frank Seely represented Hopdoddy in the transaction.

"We have been big fans of Hopdoddy since visiting them in Austin years ago," Braun leasing director Zachary Wolf tells CultureMap. "They provide a high quality product and a family-friendly atmosphere that will fit perfectly in the Heights.

Since arriving in Houston last year at River Oaks District, the Austin-based better burger joint has taken Houston by storm with two additional locations in Rice Village and Vintage Park. The restaurant's use of high-quality ingredients like Angus beef and sushi-grade tuna for burger patties that are served on in house-baked buns has proven to be a winning formula; Hopdoddy also recently became only the second restaurant in Texas to serve the Impossible Burger, a vegan-based patty that appears to "bleed" like a beef burger.

As the "hop" part of its name implies, those burgers get paired with a solid selection of craft beer, along with sodas, milkshakes, and cocktails. Fresh cut skinny fries, available with a surprisingly good queso, only further enhance the restaurant's appeal.

“We chose to open a Hopdoddy in the Heights because we received several requests from current guests to open in the area and it is such a vibrant and welcoming community," brand manager Erin Fohn tells CultureMap. "Hopdoddy is so excited to join this wonderful neighborhood.”

Hopdoddy manages its famous line in a number of ways. A dedicated server offers diners the chance to get drinks while they wait, and the kitchen sends out a constant stream of samples of both fries and shakes.

Then again, those lines could be a little shorter in the Heights. The neighborhood is already home to a number of popular burger joints and restaurants that serve good burgers, including Hubcap Grill, Becks Prime, and Down House. Recently opened Balls Out Burger, the imminent arrival of Bernie's Burger Bus, and plans for a second location of The Burger Joint will only add to the mix.

Thankfully, Houstonians appetite for burgers seems to be pretty limitless.

CultureMap also asked Wolf is he had any comment on Eater Houston's recent report on rumors that State of Grace owner Ford Fry has plans to open a Tex-Mex restaurant called Superica at the Waterworks.

"I know nothing," he replied. Count that as a rumor for now, but expect more tenant announcements soon.

Washington Avenue bar rebrands with neon lights and $12 martinis

The former Hendo's has a new name.

Bartender Ashley Bell is trying to achieve a tricky balance with The Bell and Crane, her new bar on Washington Avenue. Newly opened in the former Hendo’s space at 908 Henderson St., the Bell and Crane intends to serve as an elevated take on a neighborhood dive.

Formerly Henderson Heights, Bell acquired the bar in 2023. After operating it for a couple of years as Hendo’s, she decided on a full rebrand that included new design elements and a new menu. She chose the name the Bell and Crane as a combination of her mother’s last name and the English translate of her father’s last name.

“We offer Southern hospitality in an elevated dive bar environment,” Bell said in a statement. “We’ve designed it to feature neon lighting, maroon paint, funky artwork, and new curtains, while still offering quality wells, bar classics like iced down tallboys, rumples, and TVs mounted throughout the space.”

On the elevated side, the Bell and Crane serves a selection of martinis, including Tomato (cherry tomatoes, basil, vinegar, vodka, etc.), Strawberry Jam (gin, strawberry jam, etc.), and the obligatory Espresso. House cocktails include a Peach Aperol Margarita and the Smoke & Honey (mezcal, rosemary honey, triple sec, etc.) along with classics such as the Old Fashioned, Manhattan, and Ranch Water. Thankfully, they’re all priced at a neighborhood friendly $12 each.

Bell’s food selections further enhance the bar’s neighborhood dive aesthetic. Options include dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets, cups of ramen, Dunkeroos cookies, and hot dogs.

Similarly, the Bell and Crane will host karaoke every Tuesday and Friday with music by a live band.

The bar will celebrates its grand opening with a party on Saturday, October 18. While the event is free to attend, those who purchase a ticket ($65) will receive a barbecue plate (one entree and three sides) from nearby Henderson & Kane, three cocktails, reserved seating, a coupon for 10-percent off their next visit, and a swag bag.

“I am so stoked to welcome the neighborhood and visitors in this area to the Bell and Crane,” Bell said. “I grew up here, so this really feels like a full-circle moment for me. It feels like the start of something great, and my team and I can’t wait to build a legacy in this space with so much history.”
