For years, it's been virtually impossible to cross over Buffalo Bayou without dodging cars as they whiz by within a few inches. But that's changing. As part of a series of improvements along the bayou between Shepherd Street and downtown Houston, a new pedestrian bridge is nearing completion.
Millis Development & Construction workers used a huge crane to install the final span for the Jackson Hill Street Pedestrian Bridge on Thursday. The 345-foot bayou-spanning bridge connects trails on the north bank to the Allen Parkway side. It will also connect via a small plaza to the east and a footpath connector to the west will also be added.
In a press release, the Buffalo Bayou Partnership noted that the new bridge will be similar to the pedestrian bridge near the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, which provides a safe and convenient route for cyclists and pedestrians to cross over Buffalo Bayou.
This week, Houston City Council also approved a plan to provide 150 miles of a connecting hike and bike trail system along Houston bayous.
