Own a piece of the store

Sale of the century: Neiman Marcus plans stock offering of up to $100 million

Before long, you can own a piece of Neiman Marcus.

The luxury retailer, which is currently owned by private equity firms TPG Capital and Warburg Pincus LLC, filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed initial public offering of its common stock.

The number of shares to be offered and the price range for the proposed offering have not yet been determined, the retailer said in a press release issued Monday morning. Reuters reports the initial IPO could be as much as $100 million.

The Dallas-based chain operates 41 Neiman Marcus stores, including Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth and Austin locations, Bergdorf Goodman in New York, a chain of lower-priced outlet stores called Neiman Marcus Last Call and Neiman Marcus Last Call Studio and online operations under the Neiman Marcus, Horchow, Last Call and Bergdorf Goodman brand names.

Founded in 1907 in Dallas by Herbert Marcus, Carrie Marcus Neiman and Abraham Lincoln Neiman, the store pioneered the merchandising of luxury goods with flair under the supervision of Herbert Marcus' son, Stanley, who first joined the store in 1926.

In 1969, the company was sold to Carter Hawley Hale Stores, but Stanley Marcus stayed on with a free hand in running the business. In 1972, he was succeeded as president by his son, Richard, and became board chairman and later chairman of the executive committee.

Stanley Marcus died in 2002 at age 96.

In 1987, the retailer became a publicly listed company under General Cinema, later to become Harcourt General. It was purchased for $5.1 billion in a leveraged buyout by two equity firms in 2005 and became a privately-held company.

Athleisure giant Lululemon stretches out with new Heights store

Lululemon will be opening its newest location in the Heights on June 11.

Global athleisure brand Lululemon is leveling up in the Heights with a big move to a larger location. For Heights shoppers who live in leggings, the new location is just a short jog away from its former home.

The popular athleisure brand has officially closed its boutique-style storefront at Heights Mercantile and is relocating just five minutes down the street to a more spacious, high-traffic location at M-K-T Heights. This move is a progression for the brand in one of Houston’s most sought-after shopping neighborhoods.

Their former spot on Heights Street, housed in a repurposed residential building, was charming and very successful. It was so successful that the brand felt it needed more square footage to accommodate the needs of its shoppers.

The brand did not want to go too far from its original location and identified M-K-T as an excellent place for a new outpost, a M-K-T representative tells CultureMap.

The space, which is scheduled to open on June 11, will offer a more traditional layout, in line with the brand’s familiar store design, and brings additional benefits. The new store will be adjacent to a curated mix of local and national retailers, including Chloe Dao, Ray-Ban, Buckle Bunny Hat Bar, as well as restaurant favorites Buttermilk Baby, Mala Sichuan, and Casa Nomad. It will gain visibility from increased foot traffic, enhanced signage, and a sleek, open interior that allows for a more elevated guest experience.
