Move over, Housewives! Houston Texans, with entertaining Watt, star in reality TV series

    Shelby Hodge
    May 27, 2015 | 4:54 pm

At last, Houston, we have a bonafide reality TV show. And it offers soooooo much more than the Kardashians or the Housewives. Think beefy guys on fire, fierce competition and nerves of steel. It's the Houston Texans starring in HBO'sHard Knocks.

As with any reality show worth it's ratings, Hard Knocks will take viewers behind the scenes with the Texans at training camp in this 10th season of the Sports Emmy Award-winning reality program.

Producers say in a statement that "the cinema verité series will focus on the daily lives and routines of players and coaches as the Houston Texans, who play in the hard-nosed AFC South, conduct the franchise’s 14th training camp . . . Each week, players will experience drills, instruction, meetings and fun, while striving to prove they have what it takes to make the team and leave their mark on the NFL."

The announcement was made at NRG Stadium Tuesday afternoon with honchos from both the team and the network joining in. Owner Bob McNair and general manager Rick Smith headed the announcement press conference with Ken Rodgers, NFL Films supervising producer, and Matt Dissinger, NFL Films supervising producer.

On what he hopes the Texans can present in this format, McNair commented, "The last year has not been the best year for public relations for the NFL. Our team has not had the kind of problems that existed with many teams. I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for the rest of the country to see that we’ve got a first class group of players and coaches and this is the way we would like to see the game presented and these are the type of participants in the game."

CBSSports.com is all over it, providing viewers with five reasons that the team will be fun to watch. No. 1 — J.J. Watt "not just one of the best players in the NFL, he's also one of the most entertaining."

The five-episode, one-hour series launches Aug. 11 in the 9 p.m. slot and continues each Tuesday thereafter through the season finale on Sept. 8. You can view the trailer here.

Houston Texans owner Bob McNair says the Texans will present a positive image for the tarnished NFL.

Sylvester Turner, the former mayor of Houston who won election last November to fill late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee's seat in District 18, has died, ABC13 learned Wednesday morning. He was 70.

This morning, @houmayor John Whitmire announced the death of former mayor, Congressman SylvesterTurner.

Turner served two terms as mayor of the City of Houston after being elected in 2016.

His tenure ended last January. Ten months later, he ran to fill the seat once held by longtime Congresswoman Jackson Lee, who died of pancreatic cancer in July 2024.

"A remarkable public servant who impacted millions of people. He rose from poverty, but never forgot where he came from. It is a terrible loss for the city and a personal loss for me. I ask Houstonians to celebrate his life," Houston Mayor John Whitmire, who recently attended church with Turner, said.

Whitmire opened Wednesday's council meeting, which paused for an hour of reflection, with remarks about Turner's death. Flags at City Hall have been lowered to half-staff.

"It is with inexpressible sadness that we, the family of Congressman Sylvester Turner, representative for the 18th congressional district of Texas, acknowledge his unexpected passing," his family said in a statement.

According to his family, Turner was taken to the hospital Tuesday night and later released while in Washington, D.C. At 5:45 am Wednesday, he died at home from enduring health complications, the statement read.
