The Procrastinator's Guide to Memorial Day Weekend
There's a whole lot going on this Memorial Day weekend. In a recent segment of Great Day Houston, CultureMap contributor Marcy de Luna and Great Day host Deborah Duncan highlighted some of the prime activities (see video below). They include:
Beginning Saturday, Moody Gardens is transformed into a prehistoric stomping ground with more than 20 lifelike animatronic dinosaurs, including a full-size Tyrannosaurus Rex, a baby T-rex and its nest, a Triceratops and a Stegosaurus. The exhibit Dinos Alive! takes guests on a Jurassic adventure as they become part of a rescue team sent back in time to search for a missing plane and its crew. Admission: $7.50.
Dancin’ in the Street...Motown & More Revue
A Memorial Day Weekend tradition at Miller Outdoor Theatre continues with a soul music spectacular that pays homage to musical legends Chaka Khan, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, the Tempting Temptations and more, including American Idol semifinalist Vincent Powell and the 23-piece BACEMENT Soul Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Jimmie Walker. Nightly through Sunday at 8:15. Admission: Free.
Fast and Furious star Michelle Rodriguez and Star Trek's Patrick Stewart are among the notables at Comicpalooza: The Texas International Comic Com at the George R. Brown Convention Centert Friday through Sunday. Admission at the door: Adults $25 Friday and Sunday, $35 Saturday (online rates $5 off); children $10.
Houston's comedy festival continues through Saturday night at the Station Theater with performers in improv, stand-up, performance art and musical comedy routines. Headliners include Ramin Nazer, Glaundor, Parallelogramophonograph, Stupid Time Machine, Waterpark and others. Admission: $10.
Concert at the Square with Grupo Fantasma
The Grammy award-winning Latin funk orchestra from Austin promises to raise the new roof at Market Square Park with a free concert Friday night at 8.
Memorial Day Observance at Bear Creek Pioneers Park
Remember our fallen veterans at the annual observance organized by Harris County Precinct Three Commissioner Steve Radack. It's 2 p.m. Monday at the Harris County War Memorial in Bear Creek Pioneers Park.
