    Procrastinator's Guide to Mother's Day Dining: New restaurants offer brunch for the first time

    There’s still time to make your reservations for a Mother’s Day meal on Sunday, and we've got your go-to list for top menus at seven hot spots new to the Mom's Day game this year.

    Radio Milano

    Treat mom to an Italian feast at one of two seatings at CityCentre’s Radio Milano: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. or 5 - 9 p.m. Get your fill at the pasta, egg, carving and salad stations during brunch ($45 per adult; $20 for children ages 5-12). You’ll also enjoy items like short ribs (with tomato sauce and spring vegetables) and chicken Parmesan (with your choice of roasted cauliflower, fingerling potatoes or asparagus). Save room for dessert from chocolate mousse to carrot cake.

    Take mom out for a night on the town, and a three-course, prix fixe dinner ($60 per person) featuring items like lobster soup (with crostini and pesto) and duck breast (with cherry sauce, cabbage and chickpeas).

    JW Marriott Houston Downtown

    The spread of all-you-can-eat items (11 a.m.-3 p.m.) at the JW Marriott Houston Downtown's Picasso Room, offers an assortment of goodies including omelet, waffle and dessert stations, plenty of a la carte items (think chile rubbed tenderloin with mashed potatoes and roasted banana, and walnut French toast), a cold seafood bar with shrimp and crab claws, and more ($79 per adult; $50 for mom).

    Anejo

    Uptown Park's chic Tex-Mex dining spot, Anejo, presents its first ever Mother’s Day buffet ($45 per person) from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Expect street taco, breakfast taco and omelet stations and a complimentary to Orange Kiss cocktail (made with orange vodka, orange-flavored cognac liqueur, orange bitters and sparkling wine) for mom.

    Commonwealth

    Celebrate at Washington Ave. eatery, Commonwealth, with a three-courses of New American fare — and a free mimosa for mom ($35 per person). Start with items such as cherrywood smoked salmon (with dill creme fraiche, hash browns and eggs) or a cheese plate. We recommend the eggs Benedict (with crab claws and corn) or chicken and biscuits (with gravy and a fried egg) as your second course. Chocolate mousse and a fruit tart are on the list of desserts.

    Sud Italia

    Rice Village's Sud Italia will host a special three-course menu ($55 per person) of standout coastal Italian cuisine (11 a.m.- 5p.m.). Highlights include the fritto misto starter (a fried combination of lobster, shrimp, calamari and vegetables), the red snapper entree (filet sauteed in white wine broth with herbs and tomatoes and served over a bed of mixed vegetables) and third-course dessert, cannoli. PS Bottomless blood orange mimosas can be yours for $15.

    Harwood Grill

    Load up at the buffet ($49 per person) at the upscale but comfy River Oaks neighborhood gem (11a.m.-4p.m.). While the menu here is heavy on the akaushi beef (a breed of Japanese cattle raised in Texas) including rib roast, beef bacon eggs Benedict and lasagna with akaushi beef bolognese, you'll also find citrus-brined fried chicken, fruit salad and more.

    Paul's Kitchen

    Along with omelet and dessert stations and a build your own waffle bar, the lavish buffet-style meal ($39 per adult; $14 for kids under 12) at the homey Paul's Kitchen (10 a.m.-3 p.m.) features buttermilk fried chicken, poached eggs (with bacon, buttermilk biscuits and chorizo gravy) and other tasty American dishes.

    Coming soon to Fredericksburg

    Houston restaurant vet serves up Roman-style eatery in the Hill Country

    Valerio Lombardozzi is opening Bottega Salaria in the former home of La Bergerie.

    Valerio Lombardozzi’s culinary career has taken him to the world’s finest kitchens, including restaurants owned by icons like Alain Ducasse, Giorgio Locatelli, and Joël Robuchon. In Houston, he led La Table and Tavola, where he earned a reputation for being one of the city's most engaging front of the house personalities.

    But his latest project might be his biggest accomplishment yet. The hospitality veteran is opening Bottega Salaria, a homey Italian osteria and artisan market, in the former home of La Bergerie at 312 E Austin St in his adopted home of Fredericksburg.

    Lombardozzi says the restaurant, expected to arrive in winter 2026, fills a gap in the Hill Country dining scene, but, more importantly, it's a reflection of his personal history and time spent working at his family’s restaurant in Rome.

    “[It’s about] where I grew up, how I grew up, and how I eat,” he shares.

    The three-concept experience is inspired by Italy’s Via Salaria, the ancient route Italians used to transport salt from the Adriatic Sea to Rome. The menu acts as a sort of travelogue, borrowing from the different cultures along the road, and the way village fishermen and shepherds ate.

    Lombardozzi is quick to say he didn’t want to open a chef-driven restaurant. Instead, the osteria will serve traditional Roman staples such as cacio e pepe, amatriciana, carbonara, saltimbocca with sage and prosciutto, and branzino carved tableside.

    “I was one of the last to be exposed to the old generation of professionals who knew how to carve elegantly for the guests,” he says.

    The adjacent bottega will stay open during restaurant hours, offering fresh pasta made on-site, house-made sauces, imported Italian pantry items, cheeses, salumi, breads, and biscotti. Patrons will be able to shop for individual items or put together custom gift baskets.

    Outdoors, La Fraschetteria will debut a new hospitality experience in the U.S. The self-guided experience invites diners to grab wine directly from garden shelves, gather a spread of meats, cheeses, bread, or pasta, and linger around long communal tables lit by string lights.

    Keeping the chit-chat going will be a thoughtful beverage program anchored by a primarily Italian wine list and imported beer. Lombardozzi says the cocktail menu might be a surprise, offering only gin and tonics, spritzes, and negronis. The latter has been made into a game where diners roll dice to determine the evening's combination of gin, vermouth, and bitters.

    After dinner, guests can select an amaro from a rolling cart, sip grappa and limoncello, or sip a neat whiskey.

    Lombardozzi shares that he wants Bottega Salaria to be just as comfortable for Fredericksburg locals as it is for destination travelers. Beyond daily service, Bottega Salaria plans community events such as garden wine nights with live music, Sunday movie nights, and hands-on cooking classes.

    The space is designed for ease with a warm palette combining olive green and pomegranate reds. The decor blends heritage and modernity, bringing in objects like antique mirrors, plates, custom-made lamps, and even old tablecloths and curtains for an Old World feel.

    "We’re not just opening a restaurant,” Lombardozzi says. “We’re creating a gathering place. A home for everyone who loves Italian food, culture, and the joy of sharing a meal with others.”
