It was bound to happen. Houston's got a macaron store, a Bundt cake shop and cupcakeries galore — and now we can add a pie place to our burgeoning culinary repertoire.
Welcome Mighty Sweet Mini Pies, a teensy storefront on North Main in the Heights, which officially opened last week offering personal, five-inch mini-pies.
Mighty Sweet is baked, owned and run by mother-daughter duo Carolyn Birden and Bianca Davis.
"Pies just run in our family," says Davis, gesturing to a classic black-and-white photo of her grandmother behind the counter. "We started with her recipes and tweaked them here and there over the years to make them our own."

It was the German Chocolate Pie — a rare find in Houston, and a favorite in my own family — that caught my eye. With its flaky crust, creamy chocolate center and hint of toasted coconut, it certainly met my high expectations.
Even more impressive was the Tangerine-Chess; the custard-like filling heavily accented with citrus tasted like lightness made sweet. I imagine this will become my new summer craving.
Davis' favorite? "The French Silk," she says without hesitation. "My mom makes it every year on my birthday."
Her wistful expression makes me wonder when they'll have that one in stock.
The friendly pro-pie-etress says they'll take flavor requests if you've got 'em, so stop on by. Mighty Sweet also offers breakfast pies (quiches, really) on Saturdays and Sundays. And it's nice to note that they often have a sugar-free icebox pie, too.
