ART AND ABOUT

Project Row Houses' latest exhibition looks at food in a different way

03.26.11 | 06:21 am

It's no secret that Houstonians love to eat out. It's just what we do.

Our preferences may be changing, shifting from a world of abundance and gluttony to one that values sustainable practices, organic products and locally sourced ingredients. We need food to live, but part of our rituals include pleasurable eating as well.

Food is culture.

Project Row Houses' Round 34: Matter of Food uses that as a departure point to inspire artists Tarsha M. Gary, Michael Pribich, RootDown H-Town, Toni Tipton-Martin & Luanne Stovall, Jorge Rojas and Tattfoo Tan to create their own environment.

CultureMap goes "Art and About" to chat with New York-based art activist Tattfoo Tan, who has used his passion for eco-friendly living to better himself and the communities around him, guerilla style.

Grenades become "Greenaids," look-alike devices that contain biodegradable materials and organic seeds. Junk mail is transformed into "Green-raids," planes crafted out of handmade paper speckled also with seeds. Attacking an area with these "weapons" takes on a different meaning.

S.O.S (sustainable organic stewardship) has never been so green.

Round 34: Matter of Food is on display through June 19 at Project Row Houses, with an opening reception on Saturday, March 26 from 4 to  7 p.m. Admission is free.
