It was yummy in the tummy as big-name chefs turned up the heat at Flavors ofHouston
No more wondering what culinary delights chef Ryan Hildebrand has in store for diners when his Triniti restaurant on South Shepherd opens in November. And no guessing what seasonal taste sensations chef Michele Mazza has on the menu for Il Mulino. Both kitchen wizards and a host of others strutted their culinary stuff Tuesday night at the American Liver Foundation's "Flavors of Houston" dinner, revealing a flavorful fall.
Thirteen chefs each prepared their own multi-course feasts tableside at the Hilton Houston Post Oak for paying customers. The chefs provided not only the food and wine but also the china, the glassware and table decor. Hildebrand, accompanied by sous chef Greg Lowry and pastry chef José Hernandez, even provided the rustic, wood-carved chairs that will dress his new space.
Dinner chef chairs A.J. Junnarkar of the Downtown Aquarium and Malik Riley of the Hilton Post Oak oversaw the evening for 200 dinner guests, many of whom applauded, hooted and hollered in appreciation of the chefs' various efforts.
A few highlights of the dinner tables: Mockingbird Bistro's John Sheely's roasted chateaubriand with wild Oregon mushrooms and seared diver scallops with lemon risotto; the San Luis Resort's Brian Robertson's butter-poached lobster; and Mazza's lamb scottatina with Barolo wine sauce. Mazza, executive chef of Il Mulino and Trattoria Il Mulino restaurants around the country, flew in from New York to prepare his scrumptious meal. (Loved his gorgonzola stuffed figs with port wine reduction.)
From the menu of the soon-to-open Triniti, Hildebrand served sweet corn rissoto with Nantucket bay scallop and pork belly, Strube Ranch strip loin with tripe and marrow and Dewberry Hills Farms chicken.
The full complement of chefs included Daniel Nemec of Kirby's Prime Steakhouse in The Woodlands, Jason Chaney of The Barbed Rose Steakhouse and Seafood Co., Kyle Dennis of Spencer's for Steaks and Chops, Christofer "CJ" Dilán and Tony Benning of Farrago World Cuisine, John Sikhattana of Straits Restaurants, Rolando Soza of Bistro Alex and Adam West of Monarch Restaurant in Hotel ZaZa.
Among those sitting down for the memorable feasts were Scott Ballew, artist Graydon Parrish, Gail Mason, Brittany Zucker, Sanford Steinberg, Dr. Sharad Sharma, Dr. Luca Cicalese, Dr. Cristiana Rastellini, Dr. Philip G. Thomas and Hector Reyes.
