Nearly 1,000 guests and high dollars take Urban League gala over the top
With the National Urban League marking a century of service this year in communities across the country, the Houston Area Urban League celebrated the mother ship's legacy of good works at its annual gala held at the Hilton Americas-Houston.
It was a banner evening for the local chapter. Close to 1,000 guests helped raise revenues well into the six figures, a number that easily surpassed the fundraising goal. "A Century of Empowerment" was the theme of the black-tie gala that honored entities that have financially aided in the local Urban League's mission of making a difference in the lives of those seeking equality.
Receiving awards were Bill Young Productions, Chevron, State Farm Insurance, CenterPoint Energy and Houston Area Urban League Young Professionals.
The upbeat evening, held in a stunning ballroom decorated in black and white with electric lavender lighting, featured the sounds of the Conrad O. Johnson Big Band under direction of Barry Lee Hall Jr.
Key players in the black-tie success were honorary chairs Saundra and Benjamin Hall III, gala co-chairs Phil Dyson and Laurie Vignaud, board chair Barbara L. Seymour and HAUL president and CEO Judson Robinson III. Helping rev the engines of enthusiasm for the evening as gala committee members were Argentina James, Cary P. Yates, Cherise Guillroy, D'Anderia Dunham and Dawn Moses.
