Fore sure: Gophers on the Green party hits a hole-in-one for Hermann Park
It's not everyday one strolls into a social and finds Baby Ruth candy bars piled high on silver trays, flanking an ice sculpture resembling golf gear with a movie projected on a wall.
Inside Hermann Park's mansión-style Historic Club House, the aged textured stucco walls, Spanish tile roof and vintage exposed wood beams took on a wacky scene as youngish fashionistas embraced the roles that Rodney Dangerfield and Chevy Chase coined in the 1980 comedy, Caddyshack.
As dusk descended over the gentle rolling berms of the golf course, retro check prints, preppy over the shoulder sweaters and cabbie hats colored the zestful ambiance, calling for gaudy gopher or country club chic garb. When DJ MAV hit the right mix of old-school tunes and clubby thump-thumping tracks, the genteel landscape became an after-dark hot spot with 350 plus guests unleashing their inner Ty Webb.
Mint juleps and pizza were par for the course, as "gophers" and golfers mingled to raise needed funds and awareness to keep up and improve the 445-acre park and Houston landmark, established in 1914. Urban Green, the young professionals membership club that strives to rouse a new generation of park advocates, plans social affairs and education events to complement Hermann Park Conservancy's efforts.
Chairs Kristy and Chris Bradshaw and Christine and Chris Transier hit a hole in one with "Caddyshack: Gophers on the Green," helping raise nearly $21,000 net, a record for Urban Green, keeping Houston verdant and fabulous.
Though Mother Nature was slightly uncooperative at times, no one really paid any attention to a little spring mist.
Caddies helping the cause were Emily and George Jackson, Chris Caudill, Edward Sanchez, Nick Espinosa and Carlos Meltzer, Miya Shay, Catarina Cron, Chip Hight, Audrey and Brandon Cochran, Divya and Chris Brown, Rachel Walton, Lisa Hayes, Kari Govin, Laura Medard, Tom Broughton, Lauren Clark, Deborah Fronza, Kevin Dewhurst, Danny David and James Sivco.
