"This is what keeps the doors open"
With no Secret Millionaire this time, Lazarus House Fiesta draws much-neededdonations
Still basking in attention from a national TV appearance on Secret Millionaire,Lazarus House opened its backyard for its ninth annual Fiesta fundraiser Saturday afternoon. More than 140 guests munched on tacos and sipped Margaritas under a tent while roving bartenders offered jello shots for a donation. Nearby a cotton candy machine spun out sugary delights for kids.
The duo of Anne Mundy and Michael Johnson performed top 40 hits and Gloria Estefan samba tunes that spurred many in the crowd to form a conga line. Afterwards, Mundy found some money on the ground from an errant dancer, which she promptly claimed for the non-profit organization that provides gym training and other wellness programs for those with chronic illnesses.
"If you lost your wad of money, I'll give you two songs," said Mundy said. "Otherwise thank you for your generous donation to Lazarus House."
Johnson's 10-year-old daughter, Kelly, raised an additional $200 in impromptu donations after belting out a couple of pop tunes.
Even though Curves owners Gary and Diane Heavin wrote out a check for $100,000 to the organization after secretly observing the good work done there during the April 3 broadcast of the popular TV show, executive director Danielle Sampey said the gift, which was received more than a year ago, has largely been used to keep the organization functioning during the down economy.
She was ecstatic that the Saturday fundraiser took in more than $10,000, including funds matched by a secret donor.
"This is what keeps the doors open," Sampey said.
Among those enjoying the festivities: Gilbert Johnson, Tino Ramirez, Mark Boring, Dr. Ken and Meghan Lutschg, Dr. Randy Mitchmore, Grady Castleberry, Steve and Monica Flores, Phyllis and Joanne Serra and Kathy Ploch.
