Silent and live auction frenzy brings in the big bucks at CAMH "View Askew" gala
While there was ample schmoozing, bountiful good eats from City Kitchen and fab dance music by New York DJ Johnny Dynell, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston "View Askew" gala held at the museum was all about the auctions.
For example, when the heated bidding finally subsided on Donald Moffett's luscious blue entry, the sale price was $54,000, well above the estimated value of $45,000. One ambitious bidder walked away with three pieces from the live auction including Ricci Albenda's painting "Money Is No Object," valued at $15,000. Kudos to Christie's Steven Zick, who returned again this year to keep bidders on the edge of their seats and the numbers flying high.
By night's end, the silent and live auctions had brought in $300,000. It didn't hurt that CAMH executive director Bill Arning closed down the silent auction lot by lot, inspiring an increase in final bids. Among those jumping into that profitable fray were Darryl Lauster, Nicole Eisenman, Randy Twaddle and Hilary Wilder.
Explaining the wealth of art donated for the auction, Arning said, "We have great relationships with the artists. Both Dean (Daderko) and Valerie (Cassel Oliver) and I have all worked with the artists, some of them for decades. We gave some of them their first shows . . . CAMH is in many ways known for its artists. They are our friends."
Gretchen and Andrew McFarland chaired the black-tie evening that drew 275 contemporary art aficionados, a truly artful crowd that shies from convention in favor of stylish individuality.
For the "View Askew" theme, Bergner & Johnson's Rebekah Johnson decorated in orange and green and scattered photo copies of the ceiling on panels that were hung conspicuously just below the ceiling. Across the panels and on party space walls, artful videos, selected by CAMH curators, looped throughout the night.
The party crowd included Marita and J.B. Fairbanks, Bridget and Patrick Wade, James Bell, Kelli and Eddy Blanton, Cabrina and Stephen Owsley, Nancy and Erik Littlejohn, Jo and Jim Furr, Poppi Massey, Sam Lasseter and Dillon Kyle, Susie and Sanford Criner, Debbie and Tom Fiorito, Wade Wilson and Celina and Jason Stabell.
