What could have been a more appropriate setting for Trees for Houston's annual "Root Ball" than a private club tucked in the forest that backs up to Memorial Park? More than 450 fashionable tree-huggers partied around the pool and beneath an arbor of oaks on a beautiful spring night, raising funds for the non-profit that plants, protects and even promotes trees.
"La Noche de los Arboles" followed, obviously, a Mexican fiesta theme with tequila flowing and guests helping themselves to a bountiful buffet of Tex-Mex specialties. Applause, applause, for chairs Lisa and Will Mathis and Sarah and Steve Pitt, veterans of the city's philanthropic fundraising scene. Their efforts earned more than $320,000 for programs that include planting trees, the most ever raised for a Trees of Houston gala.
The tony crowd included Kathy and Jody McCord, Minnie and Will Baird, Ashley and John Kirksey, Lisa and Mike O'Leary, Sarah and Duncan Underwood, Rosanna and Myron Blalock, Susan and Jeff Gray,Catherine and Parick Elkins, Kit and Carl Detering, Leslie and Abbott Sprague, Kathleen and Townes Pressler and Trees for Houston executive director Barry Ward.
