Houston's fashion notables pitch in to fight autism at glamorous gala
In only its second year, the KNOWAutism Foundation gala drew a glamorous, international crowd to Houston Country Club where the emphasis was on raising funds to provide assistance to families affected by autism.
More than 270 guests joined the evening that featured fashion designer and honorary chair Elaine Turner, who shared her daughter's story of a late autism diagnosis and her family's struggles to meet the challenges. Dr. Robert G. Voight, director of Texas Children’s Hospital Autism Center, spoke of the unique challenges faced by parents in Texas, a state which has no subsidy programs or required insurance coverage that includes autism testing.
The evening was not without its entertaining side. David Peck introduced his new Miles David line, modeled by local celebrities and professional models.
Key players in the evening were gala chair Anika Jackson, emcees Rita Garcia and Neal Hamil and KNOWAutism founder Tammy Tran Nguyen.
Helping raise more than $160,000 were Wayne Nguyen, Miya Shay and State. Rep. Gene Wu, Congressman Al Green, Donae and Rob Chramosta, Jim Turner, Jacquie Baly, Michael Pearce, Dr. Sippi and Ajay Khurana, Tracy and Harry Faulkner, and Staci Henderson.
