Iraq refugee speaks out for all humanity in Houston: And heavyweights step up for the cause

What:Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston "For All Humanity" luncheon.

Where: At the Junior League of Houston.

The 411: Cuban refugee and former U.S. Ambassador to Spain and Andorra, Eduardo Aguirre Jr. was honored at the event chaired by BBVA Compass chairman Manolo Sánchez with Alan Crain and Charles Foster serving as honorary chairs. More than $125,000 was raised for the ministries' refugee services department, which resettles refugees from around the world. Ministries president and CEO Elliot Gershenson was presented with the FBI's Community Leadership Award by Assist. Special Agent in Charge Michael Anderson.

That award is given for individuals and organizations that make a positive impact in the community. Lisa Malosky served as emcee of the luncheon that featured Iraq refugee Asinja Badeel as guest speaker.

Who: Among the 300 guests were Lois and George Stark, Diana Untermeyer, Susan Boggio, Arthur Schechter, Sidney Faust, J. Kent Friedman, Barbara Van Postman, Gordon Quan and Bill Helms.

Where: The North Boulevard residence of Richard Holt

The Scoop: In true holiday spirit, Legacy Community Health’s Holiday Schmooze unfolded on December 12 at Richard Holt’s North Boulevard estate. Picture this: Glittering yuletide wonderland decor and a canopy of twinkling lights and festive garlands. That’s the scene where more than 250 revelers sipped cocktails and savored a lavish buffet, all while supporting The Jackson Hicks Endowed Fund for the Awareness, Prevention, and Treatment of HIV/AIDS at Legacy.

Founded by the late Jackson Hicks — Houston's "Prince of Parties" who catered A-list events for more than 30 years — this beloved annual soirée has become a must in Houston’s philanthropic calendar.

Robert Palussek, Legacy’s interim CEO, and Chree Boydstun, chief development officer, greeted a crowd of well-heeled Houstonians donning their holiday finest. Guests mingled in the glow of sparkling holiday trees, their spirits high as they toasted to the cause and the season. Every detail of the event paid homage to Hicks’ legacy of generosity and panache.
