a Texas treasure
James Beard honors Galveston seafood restaurant with America's Classics Award

Gaido's is one of six restaurants nationally to receive the award.
The James Beard Foundation is honoring one of the oldest restaurants in Texas. Galveston seafood restaurant Gaido’s is one of six recipients nationwide of the America’s Classics Award.
Presented annually, the America’s Classic Award recognizes “locally owned restaurants with timeless appeal that serve quality food and are beloved by their communities.” To be eligible, restaurants must have been open for at least 10 years. Gaido’s joins a distinguished group of Texas restaurants to receive the award, including Joe’s Bakery & Coffee Shop (Austin), Louie Mueller Barbecue (Taylor), and iconic Houston Tex-Mex restaurant Irma’s, which received the award in 2008.
Founded in 1911, Gaido’s is known for its commitment to serving freshly-caught Gulf seafood as well as its iconic location on Galveston’s Seawall Blvd. Fourth generation owner Nick Gaido and his wife Kateryna maintain the legacy started by Nick’s great-grandfather San Giacinto Gaido.
“Texans and tourists alike come here for the great ocean views and warm service that makes you feel at home,” the foundation writes. “Every table is asked if it's their first time, and if so, they'll receive a short history of Gaido's. Guests are also encouraged to walk around the restaurant and peruse the many old photos, menus, and artifacts throughout the space. The current owners are very involved in the community and raise money for causes they care about, including over $50,000 for Ukraine, where Kateryna is from, at the beginning of the war.”
Gaido’s will receive its award on June 16, 2025 at the foundation’s Restaurant and Chef Awards ceremony. The organization will name the finalists for its other awards on April 2. In January, 13 Houston chefs and restaurants received semifinalist nominations.
This year's other America's Classics recipients are: Lem's Bar-B-Q (Chicago), The Pioneer Saloon (Ketchum, ID), Sullivan's Castle Island (Boston), Lucky Wishbone (Anchorage), and Dooky Chase (New Orleans).
“Independent restaurants play a crucial role in our local economies, and through the America’s Classics Award, we get to celebrate the remarkable establishments that have served as cherished pillars of culture, community, and good food for decades,” James Beard Foundation CEO Clare Reichenbach said in a statement. “It is an honor to recognize this year’s winners, who reflect the rich depth and breadth of American food culture, and who will surely continue to have a positive impact for years to come.”
