king cakes for the children
Houston's hottest bakery teams up with buzzy influencer on sweet fundraiser for kids battling cancer
One of Houston’s most popular food influencers has teamed up with a top local bakery to benefit a children’s cancer charity. Danielle Dubois and Common Bond are once again partnering on a fundraiser that will benefit those battling childhood cancer.
The effort has two goals — donating DIY king cake kits to childhood cancer patients at Texas Children’s Hospital and raising money for Sky High for Kids, which is devoted to bringing comfort to and funding research that assists those fighting pediatric cancer and other life-threatening conditions. First launched in 2021, the partnership began when Dubois, known for her HangryHoustonian Instagram account that has over 110,000 followers, connected with fellow Louisiana native Brittany Hebert Franklin, the CEO and founder of the nonprofit Sky High for Kids.
On Fat Tuesday (February 21), Sky High for Kids will deliver DIY king cake kits to Texas Children’s. Each kit contains a traditional cinnamon king cake along with a piping bag of royal icing, purple, green, and gold sugar toppings, and a plastic baby to hide in the cake.
Those who wish to contribute to the effort may order a cake online for the fundraiser. They’re also available for pre-order through February 17 for at-home decorating.
In addition to the DIY kits, Common Bond is selling fully assembled king cakes in two flavors, traditional cinnamon or raspberry and cream cheese, for $45. Available now through Fat Tuesday, the bakery will donate $5 for every king cake sold to Sky High for Kids.
“Childhood cancer remains the leading cause of non-accidental death in children,” Franklin said in a statement. “These efforts will help us in raising funds, raising awareness, and more importantly helping bring much needed smiles to the families fighting childhood cancer at Texas Children’s Cancer Center. Our organization started in Louisiana and it is great to go back to our roots. We are humbled to be a part of this project with Common Bond and Danielle.”
Last month, Common Bond CEO George Joseph partnered with El Bolillo Bakery owner Garza Management Group. The partnership brings logistical expertise to help Common Bond expand its footprint throughout the Houston area and into other parts of Texas. Currently, the bakery has four bistro locations, six locations of its quick service On-The-Go concept, and a more upscale brasserie in downtown’s Bank of America tower.
