Comida en camino: Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen joins the taco truck craze
When is a taco truck not just a taco truck? When they're known for their enchiladas.
That the case with new truck No Borders, by Sylvia Casares and Micheal Warren. Casares is the owner of Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen, a fave in West Houston. The new No Borders taco truck can be found most days and late nights along Washington Avenue, serving up Sylvia's famous enchiladas alongside tacos and tortas.
Casares is committed to making everything she serves at No Borders as good as the food from her famous Kitchens, so they have replaced the fryer with a mesquite smoker, so every piece of meat is slow-cooked and flavorful. There's a basic menu of tacos with smoked chicken, pork and turkey on corn tortillas and a menu of sauces to choose from — including salsa verde, a mild ranchero and Casares's awesome mole.
My favorite was the fanjita beef taco, the only ones served on homemade flour tortillas. There's also elotes, or roasted corn earsm as well as a delicious Texas torta of smoked turkey and melty white cheese on a spicy jalepeño bun.
And of course you can't forget the enchiladas. for now there are three basics: the classic cheese enchiladas with chili gravy that Sylvia is famous for, chicken tacos with salsa verde and sour cream sauce, and chicken tacos with the rich, distinctive mole. Casares says she's considering switching in her popular spinach enchiladas and others as daily specials.
Tacos start at $2.50, with enchilada platters of two for $5 and up. No Borders can be found during lunch in the Rebels Honky Tonk parking lot, and will serve late nights a block away in the parking lot of Urban Living. To keep a closer tabs, fans can follow the truck location, hours and menu on Twitter at @NoBordersTruck.
With No Borders as the second truck — after Hubcap Grill — started by a popular brick and mortar restaurant, we have to wonder if other places around town will be taking up mobile dining.
