No reservations, he stunk: Anthony Bourdain admits to being a Houston bust
It's not often a performer gives an honest assessment of themselves in an interview.
It's even more rare to hear them admit fault while still in the middle of the same touring act.
But that's what happened when food celeb Anthony Bourdain sat down with Jennifer Bain, the food editor at Toronto paper The Star. Before his talk in Toronto on Wednesday, Bourdain admitted his Houston show on Monday didn't live up to the sellout crowd at Jones Hall.
“Three minutes into it, I realized they’d heard it all, between interviews, articles, blogs and the books," Bourdain told The Star. "It was an awful moment for me. This audience was very wired in and this is the world we live in now. If you write about food too long, you run out of adjectives and, more importantly, you lose the sense of wonder. It’s a terrible thing.”
His comments are in line with the luke-warm reviews of the talk.
But Bourdain still has plenty of performances to give this year and a return Houston performance scheduled for next year, where he'll appear with celebrity chef Eric Ripert.
Let's see if word of mouth is enough to turn the foodies away. My guess is we'll be back for more.
