The historic downtown space that will soon hold The Original OKRA Charity Saloon is still looking pretty dusty — Houston's first non-profit bar isn't scheduled to finish renovations and open its doors until November.
But fans of the organization don't have to wait that long to check it out. OKRA is holding a preview weekend on Aug. 24-25. The bar, located in the former Red Cat Jazz Cafe at 924 Congress, will open to the public both days at 3 p.m., with OKRA members, including Ryan Rouse of Grand Prize Bar, Poison Girl's Scott Repass and living embodiment of mixologist fan fiction Bobby Heugel, serving up drinks to the public until 2 a.m.
"While we won’t have everything ready, the space itself is may be the best setting in Houston to have a drink. It’s that damn beautiful!," reads the press release.
"While we won’t have everything ready, the space itself is may be the best setting in Houston to have a drink. It’s that damn beautiful! Throw in some bar games, a great crew, and an eager crowd, and we’re sure to all have a good time," reads the press release.
And for those who would rather own a bar than hang out at one, Bobby Heugel will also teach a class on creating a restaurant and bar business plan on Aug. 26 from 3-6 p.m.
