Shut-down Washington Avenue bar to be reborn as a sports bar — again: Remodel and reopening on tap
The space that housed the once-hot and often-troubled Sawyer Park sports bar is set to be reborn . . . as a new Washington Avenue sports bar.
Adam Karam — owner of Houston hot spots Red Door, Saint Genevieve, Wonder Bar and The Good Life — tells CultureMap he sold Sawyer to his cousin Saleem Fernandez. Fernandez owns numerous clubs and bars including Roosevelt Bar on Washington Avenue and 5th Amendment in Midtown.
Fernandez didn't return CultureMap calls for comment. But Karam says that though Fernandez is remolding the space a bit, he intends to keep it a sports bar.
The massive Sawyer Park sign out front seems to be promising an opening sometime in September.
Will revitalizing Sawyer Park bring some juice back to Washington Avenue? Or has the neighborhood already matured past these type of bars? Time will tell.
