Snub city? National magazine's Top 50 restaurant list only includes one Houston spot
Bon Appetit editor Andrew Knowlton has named The Pass & Provisions as one of 50 nominees for his list of America's 10 Best New Restaurants. Knowlton cites the way the dual-concept, one roof space allows chef/owners Seth Siegel-Gardner and Terrence Gallivan "to flex their culinary muscles in a variety of ways." The nominees are compiled from restaurants that have opened between June 2012 and June 2013.
In addition to their separate menus, high-concept , multi-course tastings at The Pass and whimsical takes on classic pizzas and pastas (and more) at Provisions, the two spaces have completely distinct looks. The Pass is calm, with white walls, carpeted floors and a low key soundtrack. Provisions sports wood paneling from a basketball court on its walls, indie rock on the sound system and paper menus that also serve as placemats.
Last year, Knowlton named three Houston restaurants to his Top 50 new restaurants: Oxheart, Uchi and Underbelly. Ultimately, Oxheart ranked eighth on the final list. Next year's Top 10 debuts August 14. Hopefully, Houston can score back-to-back Top 10 spots.
Elsewhere, Dallas earned two spots for John Tesar's Spoon and modern seasonal restaurant FT33. Austin earned three nominations for modern Thai restaurant Sway, ramen spot Tatsu-ya and fancy pants restaurant Jeffrey's.
