Houston's most underrated breakfast? A grilled cheese and French toast hybridwows
The cilantro chutney at Pondicheri is something of a religious thing for me. Slightly cool and refreshing with a mild, slow-burning spice that likes to creep up on me, I'm simply addicted to the stuff.
I pour it on fluffy pieces on naan, I dip fried chicken and French fries in it and I've asked for (and received) full to-go containers of the condiment to take home for further chutney experimentation.
It's even better as a fragrant eye-opener during brunch, and it's the perfect add-on to Pondicheri's most comfort-food-friendly menu item, the chicken toaster.
Dip it in the creamy yogurt sauce that comes on the side and it's pretty much perfect..
An Indian-accented hybrid between a grilled cheese and French toast, the toaster is a sandwich framed by sweet toasted brioche bread with the aforementioned cilantro chutney, spinach, cheese and either chicken, beef keema or egg. I always go for the chicken because it adds a little more heft and the chutney flavor sticks to it in a spicy, appealing way.
Dip it in the creamy yogurt sauce that comes on the side and it's pretty much perfect.
There are plenty of other inducements on the Pondicheri breakfast menu, but the toaster is neater and easier to eat than the similar masala pav and cheaper than the equally tempting saag paneer omelet. It's also something like $6 so sometimes I go crazy and get two. Add a shandy and you've got my favorite brunch.
