Houston cake master bakes for love and money on Food Network Challenge
Think Food Network personalities are just anyone with an apron and a hankering for TV fame? Not necessarily.
Houstonian Edet Okon is a soft-spoken cake maker who graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and he'll be a contestant on Food Network Challenge this Sunday. But Okon wasn't looking for fame — Food Network bookers found his work on the Internet and invited him to send in a tape. He jumped at the chance.
"I'd been watching this show the last couple of years and to get on the Food Network was one thing I wanted to do. It's great exposure," Okon says.
Not to mention the chance at $10,000. And while high-end cakes are whimsical by nature, this challenge wrote the book on over-the-top inspiration — literally.
According to Food Network Challenge, Okon's episode is all about "love, lust...and fondant." Okon and his trio of competitors created a cake in the form of a romance novel — bodice-ripping stories included.
Though he couldn't give many details about the show, Okon describes Food Network Challenge as "a great experience" and says he would go back in a heartbeat.
"I'm definitely excited about it airing. It's my first time on a challenge, and it's a little nerve-wracking but exciting. I haven't seen the final cut, how they'll edit it and what they're going to show."
Okon is currently freelancing his skills around Houston, but says he is working on launching his own company soon. To swoon over his design, check him out on Food Network Challenge Sunday at 7 p.m..
