Shaking it up: Classic Latin cocktails get a new twist at Philippe Restaurant +Lounge
Philippe Restaurant +Lounge is putting a modern twist on a few classic Latin cocktails. Their new spin on the paloma, the caipirinha and the margarita breathes new life into these old familiar favorites from the south.
In this edition of Bottoms Up!, Phillipe sommelier Vanessa Trevino Boyd gives us the shake down on three of our favorite additions to the cocktail menu.
Her Name is Rio
A take on Brazil's national cocktail, the caipirinha, Her Name is Rio is a combination of Leblon Cachaça (sugarcane rum), ginger, lime and agave syrup.
Drunken Blues
The Drunken Blues is Philippe Restaurant and Lounge’s version of the traditional frozen margarita that has been decomposed and reborn. This rendering is served on the rocks and made with Don Q Rum, macerated blueberries and Luxardo Maraschino. The almond-like flavor you taste is thanks to the crushed Marasca cherry pits found in the Maraschino.
The Sheriff
Named for the restaurant’s service director, Sharif Al-Amin, this beverage is a slightly modified interpretation of the conventional paloma. The Sheriff is prepared by mixing El Jimador Tequila, pink grapefruit and red chili flakes. Health experts tout the active compound in red chilies with increasing the metabolism.
Burning a few extra calories may be a bonus, but really, the red chili flakes just make the drink more fun.
