Urbanspoon names best places for breakfast in Houston and the nation — but misses the mark
As they say, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and where you eat it ranks next in significance. Urbanspoon recently narrowed hundreds of thousands of breakfast venues nationwide to a succinct list of "101 Great Breakfasts in the U.S."
That list includes four Houston restaurants and, according to the crowd-sourced food review site's blog, breakfast is best enjoyed at Black Walnut Cafe, Empire Cafe, Niko Niko's Greek & American Cafe and Tiny Boxwoods.
But this list seems incomplete. Where is the breakfast klub? Why not include La Guadalupana, which offers an incomparable migas plate and Mexican coffee, or Down House, where there's always a wait to get The Vermonter?
A glance at the rest of the country proves similarly off-base. While Johnny's Po-Boys in New Orleans has worked off a Bourbon Street hangover, Tartine Bakery never fails to draw a crowd to its San Francisco corner and Café Presse in Seattle's U District is a charming spot to enjoy a cappuccino and a croque madame, simultaneously excluded are Elizabeth's Restaurant, Dottie's True Blue Cafe and the Daily Dozen Doughnut Company at Pike Place Market.
Other Texas breakfast restaurants on the list are Magnolia Cafe South and Old Pecan Street Cafe in Austin, D'Lox in El Paso, and Guenther House and Magnolia Pancake Haus in San Antonio. Remarkably, no Dallas diners were included in the roundup.
