Rice Village cake shop bakes up exciting new Med Center locale
Visitors and workers in the Texas Medical Center will soon have a new option for sweets. SusieCakes will open its second Houston-area location on Thursday, January 16, the bakery announced.
Known for its scratch-made, all-American style cakes, cupcakes, pies, and cookies, SusieCakes has grown quickly since owner Susan Sarich opened her first store in 2006. The company's first Houston location opened in Rice Village in 2017.
SusieCakes also employs a consultant who can work with customers to create custom confections. Equipped with an iPad full of photos for inspiration, the consultant hosts tastings by appointment to help conceptualize dessert spreads that can be designed to match party colors and themes.
Located at 1711 Dryden Rd., the new SusieCakes joins establishments such as Antone’s Famous Po’ Boys, the Halal Guys, and others in Pearl Hospitality's transformation of the former Medical Towers Building into a fast casual dining destination. Pearl will also open a new Westin hotel at the property later this month.
"If you can’t spell it, we don’t bake with it,” Sarich said in a statement. “Just like my grandmothers, we do not use any mixes, artificial preservatives, high-fructose corn syrups or trans-fats in our products. We bake our products using only the best ingredients, and we are thrilled to share our delicious sweets to a whole new part of Houston.”
Of course, it's not really "a whole new part of Houston." The new store is only about a mile away from its corporate sibling. Still, the ability to grab a slice of cake or cookies to take to someone recovering in one of the Medical Center's hospitals will undoubtedly lift people's spirits.
