The 1957 Doc Porter Museum of Telephone History, thought to be the target of the wrecking ball, is to instead be transformed into 24 luxury lofts, Swamplot reports. The museum is located at the corner of 18th Street and Ashland in the Heights.

Custom homebuilder Rohe & Wright — the same firm responsible for the Saint Honoré townhomes under construction off San Felipe near River Oaks — is making the call.

While no rendering has been made available for the Telephone History building and 24 cottages that will be constructed in a nearby parking lot, it's unlikely the project will emulate the Saint Honoré's 18th-century French design, which has also appeared in Rohe & Wright's Renoir, an eight-story stone condominium complex at the corner of Shepherd and Dallas streets.

The Telephone Museum dialed 911 in August 2012 before the building went up for sale in December of that same year. The museum had occupied the 7,500-square-foot space, rent free, since 1996, operating on visitor donations only. Museum officials were seeking a replacement home before the Dec. 1, 2012, move-out deadline.
