    The Interns List

Sexy maxi skirts, Peter Pan collars & cocktail rings: New York fall fashiontrends tailored for Texas

    William James Gerlich

    • Oliver Peoples Gregory Peck Sunglasses
    • Bow Belt

Interpreting the latest New York City fashion trends can be difficult for Texans, considering our contrasting climate and culture. So we asked for some help from a team of Texas natives who are interning for a fashion powerhouse in the Big Apple. Intern Tiffany Kelley spoke for the group to explain how each trend can be worn best this fall.

While some of the items were carried over from the past season, the majority of the picks are specific for Houston, and have yet to appear in the mainstream.

     Maxi Skirt

A bold maxi skirt is the top trend off the list, and is one of the most dramatic trends found for the upcoming season. With floor skimming lengths and elegant draping, the skirt serves as an impeccable center piece for any outfit and occasion.

The Alice + Olivia silk maxi skirt was chosen to represent an ideal cut, cloth and color, and when compiling an outfit with such a skirt, subtle counterparts such as sloshy T-shirts in gray, beige or brown best complete the look.

"Stick to light weight fabrics when choosing the your maxi skirt," Kelley said. "Anytime you’re wearing an excess of fabric, stay away from heavy materials, especially in Texas."

Pick: Alice + Olivia Silk Maxi Skirt

Price: $396 (available at Saks Fifth Avenue)

     Round Tortoise Sunglasses

Since in Texas the sun shines cripplingly throughout the fall, an investment in proper eyewear is essential. But hipsters rejoice, because no longer will you have to wear huge, heavy frames on your face.

Upgrading from the '80s inspired Urban Outfitters shades to a sophisticated round tortoise frame by Oliver Peoples is the optimal way stay on top of optical trends this season. And by upgrading to a frame that has been around since the early 1900s, rest assured you will never have to move on to the next trendy pair.

Pick: Oliver Peoples Gregory Peck Frame

Price: $398 (Available at Oliver Peoples online)

     Bow Belts

Representing the ultimate in femininity, refinement and grace, the bow belt is the best way to add a touch of poise to any outfit. Designer Karen Walker introduced a variety of skirts with oversized bow belts already attached, but labels like Channel and Chloe have also used a smaller bow belt with pants and pencil skirts.

A bow trend can be easily overdone, thus it's is best to stay on the weary side and choosing a simple bow that is not overpowering or obnoxious. And the most important rule: Never wear more than one bow at once.

    Pick: Lanvin's Bow Belt

Price: $550 (available at Bergdorf Goodman)

     High Waisted Cigarette Pant

"An ode to Audrey Hepburn taken to by the likes of supermodel Kate Moss, the cigarette pant is a versatile way to go from day to night," Kelley said.

The modernist movement of the 1950s inspired these tight, high wasted pants, and if worn with a sheer flowy blouse and contrasting under penning, the look will be complete.

Valentino, Balenciaga and DSquared all featured the popular pant in their latest runway collections, but a fine pant can be found at Urban Outfitters for a fraction of the price.

Pick: Urban Outfitters Bright Cigarette Pant

Price: $58 (available at Urban Outfitters)

     Statement Cocktail Ring

During the prohibition era, cocktail rings made their debut appearance at illegal cocktail parties by women who not only flaunted that they were drinking illegally, but that they were doing it with class. The ornate piece of jewelry is just as popular today as it has ever been before.

A single oversized cocktail ring can transform your outfit to extraordinary levels. Despite past trends, the cocktail ring is best worn alone, with no other jewelry to distract.

    Pick: Alexander McQueen Skull Ring

Price: $396 (available at Bergdorf Goodman)

     Effortless Hair with Hidden Braid

Wrestling with hair for hours on end is pointless, considering natural, effortless looking hair is at the forefront of fashion this fall. Pulling hair back naturally with a hidden braid or two buried beneath the locks is acceptable for nearly every occasion this fall. If strands of feather are still implanted in your hair from last year, removing them as quickly as possible is a good idea.

     Peter Pan Collar

First coming to fashion in the France and the UK decades ago, the Peter Pan collar has hit all major runways and offers a femininity that no other blouse can match. They signify a youthful innocence while also offering a touch of sex appeal.

Designers took the liberty to play with the collars proportion this season, and Prada and Louis Vuitton produced oversized flat ones that are worth noting for this season, especially once the weather cools down for layering.

Pick: Alice + Olivia Peter Pan Collared Blouse

Price: $198 (available at Neiman Marcus)

     Wide Leg Denim

Paying homage to the hippy era, wide leg denim is the staple jean to wear for fall, according to most major high end denim designers. 7 For All Mankind leads the way in making quality denim for a reasonable price, but Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein have made quality selvage wide leg denim that can will last in your closet for years to come.

    Pick: 7 For All Mankind

Price: $169 (available at 7 For All Mankind)

The devastating Independence Day floods that tore through the Texas Hill Country have had fellow Texans scrambling to support Kerr County and the surrounding areas. Texans have already shown up in a big way, but, as the Hill Country recovers, our neighbors need continuous support.

These local Houston businesses are offering generous donations through customized items, Texas memorabilia, and bespoke events to raise much-needed relief funding for those most affected by the floods.

The event will be held at the Montrose Country Club on Wednesday, July 23 from 6:30-8:30 pm.

The Plant Project presents Sunshine and Succulent Bar
Presented by the dynamic Bree Clarke of The Plant Project, this three-day event will donate 100 percent of its proceeds to Blueberry Hill Farm & Rescue in honor of Eloise “Lulu” Peck, an 8-year old girl who died in the flood. For $65, participants will create a garden from succulents, plants, and blooms that celebrate Lulu’s wonderful life and the deep, unwavering love she had for animals. The event takes place at M-K-T Heights (600 N Shepherd Dr, Ste 117) from July 18-20.

“We love the memorial fund that Blueberry Hill Farm & Rescue has created,” Clarke tells CultureMap.

    Honorable Mention

The Hotel Saint Augustine’s very Texan “I love the Hill Country so much” T-shirt sold out almost immediately, but owner Bunkhouse Hotels is hoping to release more soon. Keep an eye out on Instagram!
