Houston's Rice University honors New Orleans hip hop legend Mia X
For those who are still miffed that Lil Wayne won’t be headlining next year’s Super Bowl halftime show, we will be getting some New Orleans rap flavor right here in Houston next week.
The Center for Engaged Research and Collaborative Learning (CERCL) at Rice University will be inducting Mia X, best known as the resident queen MC of Master P's No Limit Records (and one helluva cook), into the CERCL Hip Hop Archival Collection on Wednesday, September 18.
Mia X: Soldier, Survivor, Savant will honor the contributions of the New Orleans rapper (aka Mia Young) to the cultural landscape of hip hop. This free, public event will include a panel discussion featuring Dr. Anthony Pinn, Chinara Butler (widow of Pimp C), and G Dash of SwishaHouse, who will explore her groundbreaking role in shaping Southern hip hop.
Miss X’s induction is part of CERCL’s ongoing efforts to document and honor the contributions of key figures in the hip hop community, particularly those who have significantly impacted Southern hip hop. “I'm honored to be inducted into the archive. It's a milestone for me and for the culture,” Mia X said in a statement. “I can't stop smiling. I'm so grateful.”
This event takes place at 6:30 pm, at the Grand Hall in the Rice Memorial Center/Ley Student Center. For more information, visit the CERCL website here.
Miss X will also make an appearance at Class Bookstore on Tuesday, September 17 at 6:30 pm for a book signing and promotion of her bestselling memoir Things My Grandma Told Me, Things My Grandma Showed Me. Space is limited for this event, and tickets can be purchased here.
