South Park strikes again
Timely or tasteless? The kids at South Park play Texans vs. Mexicans
South Park is widely known for its crude, hilarious parodies of popular culture and hot-button issues, and in this week's episode, that didn't change. Most likely inspired by the recent Republican debates, the writers of South Park decided to touch on an issue that hits close to home — Texas immigration.
In the episode titled, “The Last of the Meheecans,” Cartman and the gang throw out any sense of political correctness (SIT DOWN) and partake in a modern version of Cowboys vs. Indians which they’ve redubbed "Texans vs. Mexicans."
Cartman is a Texas Ranger complete with a Texas accent, chewing tobacco and a border patrol team, defending his makeshift border from Butters, the Mexican leader looking to cross over.
While the episode is sure to be controversial, this won't be the first time South Park has come under fire for their depiction of certain political or religious topics. The show has managed to offend a wide variety of groups that include Catholics, the NAACP and Scientologists.
Most recently, the show received death threats from a radical Muslim site for the show's depiction of Prophet Muhammad in an episode that aired in April.
The episode features both laugh-out-loud Texas impersonations and stereotypes as well as a great deal of offensive immigration jokes, but this is South Park, so we should probably hold on to our cowboy hats.
It will be interesting to see how they continue to depict this controversial issue, as the show is known to be more conservative in its ideals than liberal. Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have deniedSouth Park has a political agenda.
