Santa Barbara's Most Wanted
You so Quaidsy! Houston's Randy Quaid marooned in Canada due to illegalgardening
Houston-native (and California fugitive) Randy Quaid is, for the time being, marooned in Canada and it's no National Lampoon's Vacation. The actor — also known for his roles in Independence Day and Brokeback Mountain — is currently living in Vancouver, British Columbia with wife Evi as the couple avoids felony vandalism charges in Santa Barbara, Calif.
The federal government recently chose not to extradite Randy and Evi, but authorities in Santa Barbara vow that they'll pursue arrest if the couple returns to America. It's all due to the Quaids having missed multiple court appearances, reports the Associated Press.
"I feel like we've been driven out of the country and the door's been slammed behind us," Randy told the AP over the phone from British Columbia. "And for what, these phony little trespassing, vandalism charges? Santa Barbara can sleep better tonight knowing the Quaids are out of their hair."
The Quaidsy drama stems from a Sept. 2010 arrest for causing more than $5,000 in damages to a home the couple was renting. "All I did was garden," Evi told the AP.
The garden scandal was preceded by allegations of defrauding an innkeeper. The Quaids also played hooky on several court appearances associated with that mixup.
Randy and Evi were initially arrested by Canadian police in 2010, but the couple sought asylum when Evi's realized that her father's Canadian citizenship would allow her and Randy to stay north of the border.
For how long the Quaids will evade the "Hollywood star-whackers" and phone hackers remains unknown, although Randy has declared that he wishes to revive his acting career.
