Summer Fest finally gives Houston a music party it can be proud of
I don't even know quite where to start talking about Free Press Summer Fest except to say, bravo. Everyone involved deserves praise for putting together a weekend-long music festival — featuring headlining acts like The Flaming Lips, Girl Talk and Slim Thug with Bun. B — that is worthy of the fourth largest city in the United States.
Let's be honest, for a city this size we have had some pretty lame concert festivals in the not-so-distant past. I remember baking in the sun for day-long fests headlined by everyone from Asia to The Beach Boys .... which would've been cool if there were more than one original Beach Boy actually left in the band.
All the while we stand by watching as cool, chic lil' Austin turns into Hollywood South twice-a-year and invites the music world into its clubs and parks for South By Southwest and the Austin City Limits Music Festival.
With the Free Press Summer Fest (sure, I'll keep name-dropping them as the title sponsor, they've earned that much respect), Houston can now boast its own two-day festival featuring over 80 live music sets and 15-20 DJs spinning, all spread over six stages in a glorious centralized park setting.
Besides the headliners listed above the cast of hundreds is a mix of well-known, unknown, national and local acts (Wild Moccasins anyone?) that is sure to feature something that anybody with a toe that taps can enjoy.
