Houston's first rooftop cinema reveals prideful new summer lineup and fun themed nights
Since its opening, Houstonians have been packing the Rooftop Cinema Club in Uptown Park to catch cool new releases, cult classics, and sing-along favorites. Now, the city’s hottest outdoor theater unveils its first summer season, which showcases diversity in film with titles honoring black and LGBTQ cinema.
Cinephiles can expect titles such as How Stella Got Her Groove Back June 13, BlacKKKlansman June 19, The Favourite June 20, and more. In keeping with their popular theme nights, the cinema will host a special nod to dads on Father’s Day, plus a Best Friends Day and Sunglasses Day.
Comedy fans will want to get onboard with the hilarious 1980 slapstick flick Airplane! on June 22, where they can enjoy in-flight-inspired beverages, snack service, pilot announcements, and movie bingo.
June also sees the return of the popular sing-alongs, where fans can belt out choruses to Mamma Mia June 1, Grease June 3, and The Greatest Showman June 17. The club will also offer up “Rooftop Classics” including Selena, A Star is Born, The Breakfast Club, and others.
Tickets for the June lineup go on sale online at noon Wednesday, May 1. To paraphrase ’80s icon Ferris Bueller (and CultureMap food editor Eric Sandler): Tickets move pretty fast: If you don’t stop and look, you could miss them.
Prices start at $17 per person for a one-person lounge seat. A single person seat with the addition of bottomless popcorn is $20. Tickets for couples, or a roomier love seat, plus bottomless popcorn, are $24 per person. New for spring is a student discount ticket starting at $15.30, with valid I.D. required the night of the event.
As always, the cinema will serve up movie grub from Good Dog Houston, which offers three dogs: the Picnic Dog, the Uptown Dog, and The Dude. Additional fare includes fruit and cheese plates, frito pie, and chili cheese nachos. Adult beverages include a full bar with craft cocktails, local beer options, and an assortment of wines.
