Pix of the Day
Graffiti artist rebel and respected painter make an unlikely duo — and they're changing Main Street
Main Street is rocking a cool new look thanks to a collaborative mural from a rather unlikely pair of Houston artists.
Aaron Parazette and Daniel Anguilu — the first a precise abstract painter and the latter a gestural graffiti artist who goes by the tag Weah— have teamed up for the third installment of the Lawndale's revolving mural initiative, which covers the art center's northern exterior wall.
The mural, titled Skywriting, will remain on view through January 2014 at the building located at 4912 Main Street.
From a distance, the mural resembles the Houston skyline at dawn or dusk.
On paper, one might be hard-pressed to find the commonalities between Parazette's carefully-measured triangles and Anguilu's organic forms.
But given each artist's penchant for taking on large-scale projects — not to mention, a shared love of painting directly onto the wall — their trademark shapes work comfortably in tandem as Parazette's blue and orange shapes frame a patch of twisting lines created by Anguilu.
From a distance, the mural resembles the Houston skyline at dawn or dusk. California-born Parazette provides shards of sunlight on the horizon, while Anguilu's graffiti-inspired marks dart across the side of downtown buildings.
