Gone Soft for Cartoons
Is Quentin Tarantino's list of top movies an elaborate prank? The Knight and Dayof Jackass 3D
Quentin Tarantino released his top 20 films of 2010, and his choices may surprise you. Has the blood-and-gore director gone soft?
Tarantino chose Pixar's animated Toy Story 3 as his first pick, quite tame when compared to his past favorites. His 2009 list chronicling his favorite films since 1992 included violent classics like Battle Royale and Fight Club. In fact, the only thing close to Toy Story 3 was kung-fu Police Story 3.
Two more animated films made the 2010 cut, with Tangled at No. 5 and How to Train Your Dragon at 17.
Jonah Hill won over Tarantino for comedy. Both of Hill’s summer flicks, Cyrus and Get Him to the Greek, made appearances, ranking at No. 9 and No. 13 respectively.
We wish he’d explained his choices. Unfortunately, the genius director presented his picks without commentary, save Gaspar Noé's Enter the Void (10 on his list) on which Tarantino remarked: "Hands down best credit scene of the year … Maybe best credit scene of the decade. One of the greatest in cinema history."
Though it was far from a flop, Knight and Day, a secret agent movie starring Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise, confused us at No. 12. Perhaps we simply didn’t get it, kind of like how you’d criticize the dialogue of Death Proof if you didn’t realize it was an homage to grind house car chase movies.
Jackass 3D headed up the end of the list. We’re assuming (pretending?) he chose it solely for its 3D merit. The prankster sequel's superior use of 3D technology makes for cringe-inducing scenes.
One film we’re surprised Tarantino didn't nameis Sofia Coppola's Somewhere, which received the top prize from a panel headed by Tarantino at the Venice Film Festival. Perhaps he intentionally left her film off the list to settle the Coppola-phile rumors. (Claims of favoritism toward Coppola circulated after an alleged romance between the two.)
What do you make of Tarantino’s list? Is his taste refreshingly varied or too all over the place?
