The United States is classically known as a "melting pot" of culture, and Texas' blossoming diversity has earned it a top spot on WalletHub's just-released list of the most diverse states in America.

Texas ranked No. 2 nationwide for another year in a row, still living in the shadow of California, which claimed the No. 1 spot.

WalletHub's 2025 "Most & Least Diverse States in America" study ranked each state based on six different types of diversity, including socioeconomic, cultural, economic, household, religious, and political diversity.

Here's how the report broke down Texas' rank:

    • No. 2 – Socioeconomic diversity rank
    • No. 3 – Religious diversity rank
    • No. 6 – Cultural diversity rank
    • No. 13 – Economic diversity rank
    • No. 29 – Household diversity rank
    • No. 34 – Political diversity rank
The Lone Star State has major advantages over other states thanks to its large size and population, and due to its proximity to Mexico. However, WalletHub also found that Texas leads in industrial diversity with a vast pool of jobs available to residents.

Texas' racial and ethnic diversity also stands out as the fifth best in the nation. The report found that the state's population is approximately 40 percent white, 40 percent Hispanic, about 12 percent Black, and about five percent Asian.

"Texas also has the third-most language diversity, with nearly 35 percent of residents speaking a non-English language at home," the report said. "In addition, it has the third-most religious diversity and the fourth-most household size diversity."

Earlier in 2025, Houston ranked as the second most diverse large U.S. city, further proving how diverse Texas communities can foster new perspectives and economic prosperity.

"Race and gender are probably the first things that come to mind when people think about diversity, but there’s plenty more that makes this nation diverse," said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. "The most diverse states have above-average variety when it comes to people’s ages, birthplaces, languages, jobs, family structures, and more. Moving to a diverse state can be an extremely enriching experience as it exposes you to new ideas and new ways of living."

On the opposite side of the spectrum, the least diverse states in 2025 are West Virginia (No. 50), Maine (No. 49), New Hampshire (No. 48), Vermont (No. 47), and Montana (No. 46).

The top 10 most diverse states in America for 2025 are:

    • No. 1 – California
    • No. 2 – Texas
    • No. 3 – New Mexico
    • No. 4 – Florida
    • No. 5 – Nevada
    • No. 6 – New York
    • No. 7 – New Jersey
    • No. 8 – Hawaii
    • No. 9 – Maryland
    • No. 10 – Arizona
