Angel's Journey
Rebuilding a life and finding a calling: An inspirational journey through spinal cord rehab
At just 17 years old, Angel Maldonado’s life changed when a severe car accident resulted in a spinal cord injury. What followed was a journey not just of physical recovery, but of profound personal and professional transformation.
Today, Angel is a college graduate pursuing a master’s degree in psychology after gaining inspiration from his experience in the spinal cord injury inpatient rehabilitation program at TIRR Memorial Hermann.
A holistic approach to healing
Following the initial trauma of his accident, Angel arrived at TIRR Memorial Hermann to begin intensive inpatient rehabilitation. His recovery was championed by a dedicated, affiliated multidisciplinary team focusing on a singular goal: rebuilding his physical function and helping him regain his independence.
However, true rehabilitation extends far beyond physical healing. Through the Psychology and Neuropsychology Program at TIRR Memorial Hermann, Angel received emotional and mental support to help him navigate the massive life changes brought on by his spinal cord injury.
It was during this time that Angel formed a life-changing connection with Jacob Williams, Ph.D., director of the program. Through their deep, supportive conversations, Angel discovered a fascination with neuropsychology and realized that his own lived experiences could eventually help others facing similar life-altering injuries.

A future of helping others
As Angel regained his physical independence, his personal goals grew. Inspired by his care team, he returned to school to study psychology, turning his rehabilitation experience into a lifelong passion. Having successfully graduated with his bachelor’s degree, he is currently pursuing his master’s degree to help others like himself.
Angel’s story illustrates TIRR Memorial Hermann’s holistic approach to rehabilitation. True healing requires caring for the whole person by nurturing the mind and spirit just as much as the body. It is this dedication to advanced, personalized care that has earned TIRR Memorial Hermann the honor of being ranked #1 in Houston and #1 in Texas for medical rehabilitation by U.S. News & World Report.
