Half Off But Full of Love
Houston SPCA launches patriotic pet adoption special starting July 4

Let freedom bark.
The Houston SPCA is celebrating Independence Day with a mission to unite more pets with loving families. From July 4 through July 31, the organization is offering 50% off adoption fees for all dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens (and excluding equine, farm animals, and small pets). The discount applies to animals whose fees normally range from $25 to $195.
Each adoption will include the full care package designed to help new pet parents get started. Along with your new family member, adopters will receive:
- A comprehensive health exam
- Microchipping
- Spay or neuter surgery
- Up-to-date vaccinations
- A bag of Hill’s Pet Nutrition food
- A complimentary post-adoption vet visit at a VCA Animal Hospital
Prospective adopters can browse available animals online, where they’ll find a wide variety of cuddly cats and devoted dogs ready for new homes.
Adoption is a commitment
Remember, adopting a pet is a long-term commitment, typically spanning 10 to 15 years. Before visiting the Adoption Center, the Houston SPCA encourages potential adopters to review tips and resources on its website to ensure they’re fully prepared for pet ownership.
Keeping pets safe this Fourth of July
As fireworks celebrations approach, it's important to prioritize your animals' safety. Chief veterinarian Dr. Roberta Westbrook warns that loud fireworks can trigger intense stress and anxiety in pets, often leading to escape attempts.
Key tips for pet safety during the holiday include:
- Update microchips and ID tags: Make sure your pet's contact information is current. Each year, the Houston SPCA reunites about 300 lost pets with their owners thanks to accurate microchip data.
- Mind the heat: Pets need ample water and shade when outdoors. Avoid letting them near sunscreen and citronella, which are toxic.
- Fireworks and flames: Keep pets away from sparklers, fire pits, and fireworks. If hosting guests, ensure pets are secure indoors to prevent them from slipping out during the excitement.
- Watch what they eat: Foods like chicken bones, corn on the cob, chocolate, avocado, and alcohol can be harmful or even deadly to pets. Keep an eye on what’s within their reach.
- Pet-safe treats: Instead of feeding pets from the table, consider frozen pureed fruits or simple homemade treats like baked pumpkin cookies or chilled blueberries or bananas.
- Calming techniques: Distract nervous pets with toys, food puzzles, or a walk earlier in the day. White noise from a TV or radio can also help drown out sudden loud sounds.
