Giving the president a nudge
Death, taxes ... and gay marriage? Joe Biden certain that attitude change is"inevitable," but Obama holds back
Nothing is certain except death and taxes … and gay marriage? Vice President Joe Biden recently called gay marriage inevitable when discussing the repeal of the military’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) policy on ABC's Good Morning America.
“I think the country's evolving, and I think there's an inevitability for a national consensus on gay marriage," Biden said.
Hopefully Biden means it's an inevitability like spring following winter, not a hurricane headed straight for the coast. (By the way, how come we haven’t figured out how to reroute hurricanes? Someone get on that.)
If other countries are any example (e.g. Canada, the Netherlands, Spain, etc.) same-sex marriage won’t result in a storm of chaos, despite those ridiculous slippery-slope arguments that its legalization might lead to people wedding their pets.
Biden's contention appears more liberal than Obama's evolving position on gay marriage.
"I struggle with this," Obama said last week after signing a law reversing the DADT policy.
"I have friends, I have people who work for me, who are in powerful, strong, long-lasting gay or lesbian unions. And they are extraordinary people, and this is something that means a lot to them and they care deeply about," Obama said. "My baseline is a strong civil union." Obama admitted he will wrestle with the issue going forward.
Biden is known for making off-the-cuff comments. Earlier this year when President Obama signed the landmark health care reform bill into law the veep said, "This is a big f---ing deal!"
Many feel the same way about same-sex marriage becoming a legal reality. And if Biden is right, it will happen.
