Big sinkhole swallows up part of a Houston street — and the city scrambles to fill it
Think giant sinkholes are mostly a Florida problem? There may be a hole in your thinking.
A large portion of Market Street was swallowed up this week when a large sinkhole formed in northeast Houston, surprising locals with its swiftness and size.
Witnesses say they noticed the problem starting early Tuesday morning. The ground completely caved in after a METRO bus hit it. A 15-foot wide hole, which could fit a small car, was suddenly impeding traffic at 3600 Market Street by Capron, not far from I-10 in the Fifth Ward. The street was blocked off for a day while Public Works went to work.
City officials say the sinkhole was actually caused by a water main break — and that the bus hitting it was just the final blow. While the hole was being filled, nearby residences did not have water.
As this photo shows, the hole's covered with dirt now, but there is still work to be done.
