Farewell, old friend: Fiesta on Dunlavy loses its letters — and parrot, too
While the manager of the iconic Fiesta supermarket gave out coupons offering discounts at other locations to loyal customers before closing on July 15, nothing can replace the beloved store on Dunlavy and Alabama.
Longtime Montrose residents remember how, over the years, the location changed from a Weingarten's to an Apple Tree and Safeway before Fiesta settled in for a long run with great '50s and '60s oldies eminating from the overhead speakers, a killer wine department and produce and bakery sections that catered to ethnic tastes.
So we were particularly saddened when CultureMapper Nic Phillips sent in this photo showing a crane carefully removing the letters — and parrot symbol — from the storefront today. Before long, the shopping center will be demolished, making way for yet another midrise apartment complex as inner-loop Houston booms.
But that's progress?
