Big hearts and big bucks
A $22 million drive: Dr. Cooley's record-breaking donation kick starts Med Center library's future
No one would ever accuse Dr. Denton Cooley's heart of being too small. In fact it's just the opposite.
Cooley gave large donation in Texas Medical Center Library's history. It's to help power a $22 million capital campaign, Library Without Limits, to renovate the library.
The doctor asked that the amount remain disclosed and the medical center complied, but we're talking major dollars. The previous largest donation ever came in at $500,000.
With the money from this campaign, officials hope to revamp the 59-year-old library's interior and open it to the Houston community rather than just medical center personnel.
In honor of the big-hearted legend, the main entrance of the library will be named "Denton A. Cooley, M.D Exhibit Hall" and it will display all of Cooley's achievements and work in the cardiovascular field.
Cooley also donated his "body of work" in heart surgery to the library.
